Winter is the main hazard
Astana is among the coldest capital cities in the world, regularly below −30°C, and steppe blizzards close roads and strand vehicles. Travelling between cities by road in winter without a plan for a breakdown is genuinely dangerous.
In the mountains above Almaty, avalanche risk is real and rescue is slow. Check conditions and do not ski or hike beyond marked areas without local guidance.
Registration and documents
Registration is now handled automatically for most visitors arriving by air, but overland arrivals and long stays can still require it. Hotels register guests; keep the paperwork.
Police may ask foreigners for documents. Carry your passport, and be aware that photographing military installations, border areas and the Baikonur facility is prohibited.
