The tea house
Beijing (Wangfujing, Tiananmen area), Shanghai (Nanjing Road)Very commonFriendly young people, usually claiming to be students wanting to practise English, invite you to a traditional tea ceremony nearby. The tasting ends with a bill of hundreds or thousands of yuan, presented with staff blocking the door. It is the best-documented scam in China and has run for over twenty years.
How to avoid it: Decline invitations from strangers who approach you near major sights. If you want a tea ceremony, choose the place yourself and ask prices first. If trapped, pay by card and dispute it, or call the police on 110.
