Sirens and shelters
Every building has a designated protected space, and hotels will tell you where theirs is — ask on arrival rather than during an alert. When a siren sounds you typically have between 15 and 90 seconds depending on how far you are from the launch point.
Install the Home Front Command app, which gives location-based alerts in English. If caught outside, lie flat and cover your head; if in a vehicle, stop, get out and lie down away from the car.
Security screening and Shabbat
Ben Gurion airport screening is thorough and questioning can be long and personal, particularly for travellers with stamps from certain countries. Arrive three hours before departure and answer plainly.
Public transport, most shops and many restaurants stop from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening. Plan around it, especially for airport transfers, which become expensive and scarce.
