Laws that surprise visitors
Public displays of affection, swearing or rude gestures (including in traffic and online), drinking outside licensed premises, and being drunk in public are all offences and are prosecuted.
Any amount of a controlled substance — including traces in a blood or urine test from consumption before arrival, and some products legal elsewhere such as CBD oil and certain codeine medicines — can lead to arrest. Carry a doctor's letter for prescription medication and check it against the UAE's controlled list before flying.
Photographing people without consent, and photographing government or military buildings, are also offences.
