Use the official taxi queue on the airport's public transport floor, not the touts in arrivals. Ride-hailing apps operate in both cities and remove the argument entirely.

A tout offers a free or cheap show. Once inside, drinks appear and the bill arrives at tens of thousands of baht, with the exit blocked until you pay by card. Do not follow street touts into upstairs venues. If it happens, pay by card if you must, then contact the tourist police immediately on 1155 — card charges can sometimes be reversed.

Is Thailand safe to visit in 2026?

Thailand's reputation for danger is misplaced in one direction and understated in another. Violent crime against tourists is rare. Road deaths are among the highest in the world, and rented motorbikes kill and maim foreign visitors every week.

The scam economy is mature and mostly financial: rental damage claims, gem shops, and transport overcharging. The southern border provinces have a long-running insurgency that most governments advise against visiting.

Where the risk actually is

Each region is coloured by the advice that applies to most of it, drawn by hand from the wording of all five government advisories. Numbered markers flag localised warnings — usually a border strip or remote interior — that cover only a small part of an otherwise lower-risk region.

What the warnings actually cover

Pattani — Essential travel only. Essential travel only to the whole province. A separatist insurgency near the Malaysian border has produced regular attacks for two decades. Entirely separate from the tourist south — Phuket, Krabi and Samui are 700km away.
Yala — Essential travel only. Essential travel only to the whole province, for the same insurgency. No tourist infrastructure.
Narathiwat — Essential travel only. Essential travel only to the whole province, for the same insurgency.

Southern Songkhla districts — Essential travel only. Essential-travel-only covers four districts only — Chana, Thepa, Na Thawi and Saba Yoi — plus the Hat Yai to Padang Besar rail line. Hat Yai city and the rest of Songkhla province are outside the warning.

Cambodian border strip — Do not travel. Land borders with Cambodia are suspended after fighting in 2025. The Dutch code is red within 5km and the FCDO advises against travel within 20km. Khao Phra Wihan, Ta Muen Thom and Ta Kwai temples are closed, and there are unexploded landmines.

Myanmar border strip — Essential travel only. Essential travel only within 10km of the Myanmar border, where the Myanmar army is operating close to the line. The border towns of Mae Sai, Mae Sot and Ranong are specifically excluded.

The 'Grand Palace is closed today' tuk-tuk

A friendly man near the Grand Palace tells you it is shut for a Buddhist holiday or royal ceremony, and offers a cheap tuk-tuk tour instead. The tour visits gem shops and tailors that pay him commission, and high-pressure selling follows.

How to avoid it: The Grand Palace is open daily. Walk to the official entrance and check for yourself. Ignore anyone who volunteers that a major site is closed.

Gem and tailor commission shops

You are told you can buy gems tax-free and resell them at a profit at home. The stones are near-worthless and the claimed resale market does not exist. Thai police have run public campaigns about it for decades.

How to avoid it: There is no gem arbitrage. Do not buy jewellery you cannot value yourself from a shop you did not choose.

Risk hotspots

Specific places that come up again and again — either in government advisories or in traveller reports. Everywhere else in Thailand is not automatically fine, but these are the areas worth a plan.

Yala, Narathiwat, Pattani and parts of Songkhla Insurgency

A long-running separatist insurgency with regular bombings and shootings. The Dutch and UK governments advise against all but essential travel here; it is entirely separate from the tourist south.

Thai–Cambodian border strip Border conflict

Military checkpoints, a closed border and landmine risk within 5km of the line following recent clashes.

Phuket and Samui ring roads Traffic

The single most dangerous thing most visitors to Thailand do. Steep, wet in monsoon season, and heavy with inexperienced riders.

Full Moon Party, Koh Phangan Drink spiking, theft

Drink spiking, beach theft and injuries from broken glass and fire skipping. Buckets are strong and often mixed with cheap spirits.

Motorbikes: the actual risk

Thailand's road death rate is roughly 32 per 100,000 people — around eight times the Netherlands. Motorcycles account for most of it, and foreign riders are heavily over-represented on Phuket, Samui and Pai.

Riding without a licence valid for motorcycles voids travel insurance completely. An International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category is required, and the police check it at roadside stops. Helmets are mandatory and routinely ignored — wear one anyway.

Cannabis rules keep changing

Thailand decriminalised cannabis in 2022 and has been tightening the rules since, with recreational sale restricted and enforcement varying. Taking any amount out of the country remains a serious offence in Thailand and in every neighbouring country.
