The power grid
Hurricane Maria destroyed the grid in 2017 and reliability has not returned to normal. Island-wide blackouts have happened as recently as the last few years, and local outages are routine.
Most hotels have generators; many guesthouses and rentals do not. If you depend on refrigerated medication or powered medical equipment, ask specifically about generator capacity before booking.
Hurricane season and the sea
The season runs June to November and peaks in September. Insurance bought after a storm is named will not cover it.
Rip currents are the main cause of visitor deaths in the water. Most beaches have no lifeguard; the north coast around Piñones and Isla Verde has strong currents, and inland the popular river pools flash flood after rain in the mountains.
